U18 Championship Result 22.04.2018
Kinvara United 3 Corrib Celtic 0
Another windy day at Killina, and Kinvara captain Darren Kilkelly opted to play with the wind advantage in the first half. However, the wind proved to be so strong that it was difficult for the Kinvara lads to control the pace of their passes.
The midfield of Carraigh Murphy, Tom Brennan, Barry Britton, Rory Moran, and Danny Travis were controlling the game, but were finding it difficult to create chances for striker Oisin Casasin.
Britton tested the Corrib keeper from long range, but Celtic were content to clear the ball anywhere in the knowledge that they would be playing with the wind behind them in the second half. However, five minutes before half time, Eoghan Hanley provided a dangerous corner that Colm Moran turned into the net at the near post.
The half time team discussion was about how to cope with the expected long balls from a physically imposing Celtic team. From the kick off the back four of Daire Murphy, Darren Kilkelly, Colm Moran, and Eoghan Hanley stood up bravely to the barrage of long balls. Behind them, goalkeeper Donal Keely was as cool as a cucumber, and once again his kicking was first class.
Within a few minutes the Kinvara players began to realise that playing into the wind actually made it easier to control their passes, which gave a natural advantage to a passing team. Rory Moran’s close control began to create chances. One such run allowed Moran to play in Casasin who out-sprinted his marker, and smashed the ball against the bar. Then Moran again crossed, and Carraigh Murphy beat the goalkeeper and defender to the ball to calmly score.
On 66 minutes the game was effectively over, when Danny Travis picked up the ball to the right of midfield, before hitting it with his left foot into the corner of the net to make it 3-0.
Ciaran Mellick came on to add his strength and skill to the right of midfield, and Kinvara comfortably saw out the rest of the game.
In the changing room afterwards, news came through that Ramblers had been held to a draw by Corrib Rangers, meaning that if Kinvara beat Rangers on Thursday, we will be Champions! Rangers will be a difficult game, but the incentive is huge for these fine young men.
