Kinvara United hosted Colemanstown U16 boys in the 2nd round of the Connacht Cup. The 2 teams had faced each other in the league a fortnight previously, Colemanstown winning 3-1 last time out.
A minute’s silence was observed for the passing of Brendan O’Donoghue, Samuel’s grandad, who passed away on Friday.
Kinvara started strongly creating many attacks and turning the Colemanstown defence.
Kinvara scored with an attack down the left wing. Róan crossed in a ball that deflected off a defender and ended up in the back of the net. 1-0
Kinvara started the 2nd half with intensity and good use of the ball and provided a couple of scares for the Colemanstown defence.
Colemanstown, however, drew level after pressing well in a dangerous area, the ball being driven past the diving Otis into the bottom right corner. 1-1
Kinvara responded immediately with an excellent strike by Charlie Forde from outside the box, the ball curling around the keeper into the top right corner. 2-1
Kinvara pressed for a third and were rewarded 3 minutes later. Róan squared the ball outside the box to Charlie Forde whose subsequent shot was blocked off the line. Eli had positioned himself well to finish cooly, no simple task considering how well the Colemanstown keeper played. 3-1
Kinvara wrapped up the win with a goal just before the end. Centre back, Jake, added to his goal tally when he scored off a corner, he being the first to react to a breaking ball. 4-1
The game was played in a sporting manner and both teams deserve credit for providing an exciting match. Credit also goes to Mike Shaughnessy for a game well refereed.
Thanks to the supporters for keeping the sideline positive and supportive. We’ll carry on to the 3rd round of the Connacht Cup but our focus is back on the league and our away match in 2 weeks’ time v CS Mac Dara.
